Aacapella Read contains two libraries — one for decodable readers and one for levelled readers.

The decodable readers library is intended to be used with students who are learning to independently decode text using a systematic synthetic phonics approach. The levelled readers library is intended to be used with students working on emergent literacy goals such as engagement with books, joint attention and developing language.

All students should be given daily opportunities to engage with the rich language of mainstream story books in addition to using the books contained in the Aacapella Read libraries.

The library of decodable readers currently contains a broad selection of mainstream decodable readers from the Phonics Bug imprint. This book series is designed to be used in conjunction with systematic synthetic phonics literacy programs. These books gradually introduce new letter to sound correspondences and minimize the number of sight words. We are currently adding the Rapid Phonics series to our library. Rapid Phonics is a catch up series of decodable texts, supporting older students to develop and consolidate their decoding skills using age-appropriate texts.

The library of levelled readers contains a broad range of levelled readers from the Bug Club, Rapid Readers and Sails imprints. These levelled readers are being repurposed in Aacapella Read to support students working on emergent literacy goals. The simplified stories, graduated language, and inclusion of non-fiction texts provide opportunities for students to engage with age appropriate books that are at an appropriate language level. The predictable nature of some of the earlier books encourages students to contribute to the story reading process.

Each of these books is published by Aacapella in our AAC friendly format with the cooperation of their original publishers and copyright owners. The text in each book is identical to the text in the printed book, but sometimes it is rearranged to make it more accessible. The illustrations in the Aacapella editions closely resemble the illustrations in the original books, but may be modified to suit Aacapella Read.

There are currently over 100 books in the Aacapella Read library, and more books are added every month. We will continue to work with new publishers to broaden the range and variety of our books.
